The Ferrari F12tdf, unveiled in October 2015, stands as one of the most celebrated front-engine V12 Ferraris ever built. Based on the Ferrari F12berlinetta platform, the F12tdf is a track-focused, limited-production model that honours Ferrari’s storied past in the Tour de France Automobile race. Its name and purpose reflect a fusion of raw performance, advanced engineering, and a deep respect for Ferrari’s racing legacy.

The F12tdf builds on the solid foundation of the Ferrari F12berlinetta, itself a masterpiece. Debuted in 2012, the F12berlinetta combined grand touring luxury with cutting-edge performance. Its naturally aspirated 6.3-liter V12 earned accolades, including the 2013 International Engine of the Year Award, for its ability to deliver staggering power with exceptional refinement. Producing 740 PS (730 hp), the F12berlinetta was capable of thrilling performance yet retained the usability expected of a grand tourer.

The F12berlinetta’s design, credited to Flavio Manzoni and awarded the XXIII Premio Compasso d’Oro for design excellence, emphasised aerodynamic innovation with elements like the Aerobridge and advanced underbody airflow management.

The F12tdf takes the F12berlinetta’s concept to its extreme. Ferrari engineers reworked the 6.3-liter V12 engine, increasing power output to 780 PS (769 hp) at 8,500 rpm and torque to 705 N·m (520 lb-ft) at 6,750 rpm. These enhancements made the F12tdf the most powerful naturally aspirated Ferrari at the time, second only to the hybrid LaFerrari.

This immense power is matched with a re-engineered seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, featuring shorter gear ratios and faster shifts to optimise track performance. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes just 2.9 seconds, while the sprint to 200 km/h (124 mph) is achieved in 7.9 seconds. Ferrari claims a top speed exceeding 340 km/h (211 mph).

Weight reduction was central to the F12tdf’s development. Carbon fibre was used extensively for body panels, interior components, and aerodynamic features, contributing to a 110 kg (243 lb) reduction compared to the F12berlinetta. The dry weight is just 1,415 kg (3,120 lb), ensuring a better power-to-weight ratio and improved agility.

Ferrari also employed an aluminium space frame chassis co-developed with Scaglietti. Using 12 different aluminium alloys, the chassis increased rigidity by 20% over the F12berlinetta, enhancing handling and lowering the centre of gravity for improved balance.

The F12tdf’s aerodynamics were extensively refined to meet its track-focused ambitions. Ferrari’s design team introduced a taller rear wing, an active rear diffuser, and wider side sills to manage airflow more effectively. Combined with the Aerobridge inherited from the F12berlinetta, these changes delivered an 87% increase in downforce, keeping the car stable at high speeds and in corners.

Four-wheel steering, a first for Ferrari, added to the F12tdf’s capabilities. The system enhances agility and stability by actively adjusting the rear wheels during cornering and high-speed driving.

To match its astonishing speed, the F12tdf uses carbon-ceramic brakes with monobloc callipers, derived from the LaFerrari. This braking system ensures precise stopping power, even under the most demanding conditions.

The name “tdf” pays homage to the Tour de France Automobile race, where Ferrari’s 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione dominated in the late 1950s. True to the spirit of the race, the F12tdf blends track-level performance with road usability, delivering an exhilarating yet controlled driving experience.

With a limited production run of 799 units, the F12tdf is a rare and coveted piece of Ferrari history. Its breathtaking design, race-inspired technology, and homage to Ferrari’s past make it a standout model in the brand’s illustrious lineup. The Ferrari F12tdf is a celebration of the V12 legacy, an engineering marvel, and a reminder of Ferrari’s dedication to pushing the limits of what’s possible.
