Unveiled at the March 1964 Geneva Motor Show, the 350 GT was the fruition of a rapid development process. Originally based on the Lamborghini 350 GTV prototype, the 350 GT was the result of intensive reworking by engineers Giampaolo Dallara and Paolo Stanzani, who refined the car’s chassis and engine for mass production. This effort was crucial for Lamborghini, ensuring the car was both roadworthy and refined enough to appeal to discerning buyers.

Carrozzeria Touring of Milan was tasked with the 350 GT’s design, employing their renowned Superleggera construction technique. This process involved attaching lightweight aluminium panels to a tubular frame, making the 350 GT both agile and aesthetically stunning. The design retained the elegant profile of the GTV prototype but featured a more cohesive appearance, with fixed headlights replacing the prototype’s rotating units.

The 350 GT’s chassis, while inspired by Bizzarrini’s original racing design, was significantly modified for road use. Dallara’s adjustments included larger steel tubing for greater durability and enhanced comfort, addressing the prototype’s limitations. This chassis supported the 350 GT’s 3.5-liter V12 engine, a de-tuned version of Bizzarrini’s high-revving race motor. The final engine, producing 270 horsepower, provided a balance of performance and reliability, capable of reaching 254 km/h (158 mph).

Its performance was further enhanced by a Salisbury limited-slip differential and Pirelli Cinturato HS tires, ensuring excellent handling and stability.

Despite the initial goal of producing 10 cars per week, Lamborghini manufactured only about 120 units of the 350 GT before introducing the successor, the 400 GT, in 1966. The initial production models were fitted with lightweight aluminium bodies, which were both costly and labour-intensive. As a result, later models transitioned to steel bodies, although the early aluminium-bodied cars are now highly prized for their superior performance and rarity.

The 350 GT’s significance extends beyond its technical achievements.
